Johannesburg - South Africa's electricity company expects to be under pressure during the FIFA World Cup.

State-owned Eskom says it will regularly update South Africans on supply during the tournament, which starts June 11, and ask them to turn off some appliances if power runs low.

Under the worst circumstances, South Africans will be asked to turn off everything but one TV - so they can continue to get updates - and one light.

The utility says "although electricity supply is expected to be sufficient over this period, cold winter temperatures combined with high electricity demand is likely to place Eskom under additional pressure".

remember that Eskom is mostly Government funded....so, Government should have taken electricity supply into consideration before signing up for SWC. Eskom in theory is just along for the ride and trying their best...

Mahlol'adibona Jun 02 2010 14:05
Yeldarb, I still have to see whites toyi-toying even in matters that affect them. Please just be considerate and switch-off all your heaters and geysers. Let Eskom do their job as well and cot-off illegal connections.

dated 2 June Jun 02 2010 13:39
today's headlines, 2 June, state that Eskom have posted a R36bn profit!!!! Where does that money all of a sudden come from if they were almost bankrupt a few months back? I smell a RAT!!!

ENERGY INEFFICIENT Jun 02 2010 13:01
I to will make sure that all my appliances, lights and other are running at full tilt during the world cup.Why the hell should we inconvenience and make our lives less comfortable for supposed benefits we will never see,and try and put right what the embaciles running Eskom have managed to utterly destroy.Helping the poor?Ja mate I wanna see that happen!Cut back on J.Z , Malema , and Eskom fatcats(The three most incompetent parties in the country)luxurious lifestyles, and maybe we can talk.As for me,till then all heaters on full blast!(Who needs a fire place?)

Webb Ellis May 19 2010 15:43
I am really glad it is not the world rugby cup as then I would have to buy a generator!

@Gail May 19 2010 15:19
Of course and JZ with his side kicks, JUJU and ESKOM will come and give you your noddy badge a bit later on, PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND WAKE THE F>>>> UP, Ex Zimbabweans will testify that this is exactly the way Zim went, also you are basically contradicting yourself with comments like "oh some of the poor may benefit" and the "stolen money could not feed all of them". in my book, stealing is stealing and as long as we have impovrished people in our country, any stealing by gov fatcats should be dealt with as a crime against the people of this country.

UP YOURS EISHKOM !!! May 19 2010 15:12
I WILL MAKE SURE THAT ALL MY LIGHTS AND APPLIANCES ARE ON AND HOPEFULLY RUN EISHKOM INTO THE GROUND SO THAT SOMEONE WILL BE FORCED TO PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE !!!!!!

dylan May 19 2010 14:31
o shetskom, you ask us to conserve power that you promised you would have, your workers asking for 18%. loadsheding. i think the management at eskom derserve some huge bonuses.

Gail May 19 2010 14:25
You know I loathe most sports and couldn't care less if all the major sporting events don't come here, HOWEVER. I will do what I can because I love my country and want people who have paid money to visit to have the best possible time. While not all the poor will benefit, even a few is better than nothing. Many have benefited in the buildup. We have some beautiful new stadiums which will still be there after the SWC for South Africans to use for other purposes as well. Most of the townships which have RDP houses have metered electricity to my knowledge so no amount of extra power cords will owrk unless people pay upfront for their electricity and all those of you who are unwilling to save electricity probably don't anyway and since you do not control the electricity grid there is no way you can stop the ESKOM powers from ensuring the stadiums have power for vital matches. Yes our Govt has many flaws but so did previous govts or we would not have voted for Democracy. Get over yourselves already except to feel ashamed that you are so negative. When you are prepared to give freely of your expertise in the workplaces like ESKOM to upskill people who do not have the skills then perhaps you have room to complain. Why can't you arrange braais by lamplight on those nights when power is critical or prepare your meals during the day? Make sure you have gas and wood and supplies and you could even invite visitors to our country and show them some hospitality and SA love and ingenuity and what we are sacrificing for the Big Game. It may be your last opportunity to do so not only here but anywhere else. NONE of you appear to realise that millions of people in our country live without electricity every single day all year round and that before we had electricity we had candles and lamps and survived. YOU ARE ALL SPOIL SPORTS WHO ARE SPOILED ROTTEN. The whole world is still in a recession not just our country and Govt are not all bad. Just as the moneys they are taking instead of sharing with the poor are insufficient to feed the poor so too is your money. It is not only SA which screws up or ANC govts. People learn from their own mistakes not other peoples. At least try and make this forum a positive one and stop harping on the same old same old.

gringo May 19 2010 13:37
look at this as an awsome oppertunity. selling glow in the dark soccer balls and unforms. so if all the light go out then the whole stadium can still see the game. it will be a first for SA.......again!!!

Nico May 19 2010 12:17
What about all the advertising-boards, the office-buildings with their fancy garden-lights, the palaces of the president and ministers ???????? Why don't they switch off those lights ? ITS RIDICULOUS !!! ESCOM and our so called GOVERMENT are useless to say the least !!!!! As if I'm going to sleep cold, eat cold food, and inconvenience myself for these fraudulent morons !!!!!!

Ir8m8 May 19 2010 12:06
So on the one hand we have eskom, who up till a few weeks ago was adamant that they were capable of maintaining supply for this thing, and on the other hand you have the president all in tears because of the conditions that the people are living in in the informal settlements. Gentleman here some maths: How many houses does 50% of R10bil build and how much infrustructure would the other 50% cover. Its all fine and well going after something like this but only when your country is ready for it, you ensure that the Important things are done first. The only people that have to take Accountability for this is the ANC Morons running the country.

Spikkels May 19 2010 11:55
Next thing they're going to ask is that we only watch SABC1, save the rest for later.

O May 19 2010 11:47
I will do whatever it takes to help, even if I must go watch soccer at a friend's place.

Doug May 19 2010 11:13
so what if the power goes out at a soccer match. is it really my problem. when I see the leaders of this country earning and spending as much money as they can get on anything but energy saving, does it become my baby to save the country and them from embarrassment.

50 CALIBER May 19 2010 10:06
@ BLackJack My thoughts exactly. I can just see the Hilton Hotel in Durban with only one light on and one TV set. Who the hell is going to go into the townships and tell the Shebeen owners to turn off all their lights and TV sets except one.??? I see the ANC President is already helping towards saving power as one of his wives is not paying her water & electricity bills in her luxury house in Morningside, Durban. Wow, A FREE RIDE whilst the rest of the people suffer. I wonder if juliarse MALEMA will apply these rules to his castle???

BlackJack May 19 2010 08:51
Note how they sat that SA's will have to turn off lights etc. Keep tv on and one light. But what about SA B&B's with foreigners? Does the same 'rule' apply? I love the way that this SWC is supposed to uplift the nation and take it towards the light - but now, we are going to be plunged into darkness...

Export Quality May 18 2010 18:31
Seems that the UK and France are quite happy at the eishKOM policies of the past years - most of the top-notch technicians (y'know, thems what keeps the gennies running) are now working in power stations in FR and UK - after all, thats where the tech came from in the first place!!

50 CALIBER May 18 2010 17:01
PLAY ALL THE GAMES DURING THE DAY. The stadiums can be filled to the brim as all the wekkas are on strike. There will be no need for electricity so this way my booze and ice will be O.K.

LOL May 18 2010 15:53
Eveready is going to make a killing with this SWC!

Eddy May 18 2010 15:07

Well, slap me sideways. Am I supposed to eat my food cold then? or perhaps raw? or maybe I should build a bloody fire in the centre of my lawn? Fuel it with my furniture? I certainly cant fuel it with petrol, who the hell can afford that?? For the duration of the world cup, I will race home during my lunch hour then, shall I? Do my laundry, charge my cellphone, because God forbid I do these things when I am home - I might be responsible for plunging half of Centurion into darkness because I dared use my toaster. I wonder, if I were to get take-aways each night for the duration of the SWC, who will refund me? FIFA? ESKOM? One of these should step the hell up, I am not allowed to cook for a month, and boiling an egg on a candle could take days I'll have you know. Speaking of candles, I demand a supply of those. SWC candles. One for each room, and 12 for the kitchen for egg boiling purposes, restocked each week. Exemplary visionaries! Such meticulous planners! You do realise that EVERYTHING goes down when the power goes down? House alarms. Traffic lights. Electronic security gastes. Everything? Eskom and or FIFA need to supply the armed guards I demand to guard my property as well. DEMAND! I am adding that word to my vocabulary. Oh, and they will be needing their own bloody candles. No way I will be sharing mine.

dee May 18 2010 13:35
Camping Trip, I like your idea, it's brilliant. Just hope the Red Ants are.'t brought in to remove us "squatters"!

Bannana republic May 18 2010 13:09
Give the world something to remember. Worlds first soccer game where all the Players use a blind mans cane! Way to go Eskom. All assurances that there could not possibly be a problem and now we get scared. Well there must be a reason why Eskom is scared what could it be? Dont worry, just blame apartheid it works every time.

Camping Trip May 18 2010 11:13
Well, if the stadiums are going to have electricity, and everyone else is not, thanks to Eishkom's impeccable foresight, lets grab our tents, sleeping bags and 4x4's and go camping on the pitch at Soccer City... At least we'll have electricity, facillities, and get to watch the game... WHO'S WITH ME!?!?! Three Cheers for EISHKOM!!! BOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

White electricity May 18 2010 10:45
Yes,sure WE the City Power consumers that pay the highest kW/hr rate must save.WHY? ESKOM discriminates against white male South-Africans with AA EE BEE BBEE BBBEE. We don't feel 'part of the new South-Africa'.The report obtained by the DA clearly illustrates this fact,I read the report. There are endless graphs showing how transformation is proceeding,ie ongoing reverse racism at ESKOM. NOW,suddenly when peak demand outstrips supply,I must turn off everything.Ha ha.FAT CHANCE.The income from Soweto is 35% of what it should be.The other 65% are attributable to illegal connections. But WE,the legal paying customer, must save. What a sick twisted paradigm. And what if you are NOT a soccer fan?I couldn't care less for Sepp Blatter & kie's SWC.The poor won't see 1c from the SWC circus. And THEN,to top it all,the aliminium smelters gobble up a big chunk of ESKOM's output BELOW COST.So we must also subsidise them for their lack of vision. Also CITY POWER's website doesn't function properly, the billing system is a mess as more & more INTERIM readings are taken because CITY POWER won't pay their IT service providers. The meter readers have also disappeared. And IF ESKOM had any vision, they would have brought in meters that charge you in according to the time of day that you use electricity,as in Germany. NO,until the system is fair and just I will use electricity as it suits me when I want to,since the legal consumers pay the most and cross-subsidise illegal connections and aliminium smelters.Maybe if we all blow Vuvuzela's the problem will go away, feel it.

Themba May 18 2010 10:39
The problem of ESKOM is just very simply a lack of resource, perpetuated by poor governance. This imaginary resistance by “Whites” the ANCYL keep harping on about is a JOKE, and a LIE made up by their failing government. If you take us 4 million educated Whites (who are not by any means all wealthy) and give our "wealth" to 4 million uneducated black guys and put us Whites in Shacks, how does that end up solving the problem for the 55Million people, the 20 million unemployed and uneducated South Africans, not including the 5 million immigrants, legal and illegal? How does that solve CRIME & lack of resources for the masses! The masses are being fooled by your ANC, while they are desperately failing them. People don’t want land they want jobs and education for their kids. 40,000 farmers = 55 Million South Africans how does that solve anything, people can’t eat land, but the will starve if they keep wasting farms they reclaim and murder farmers; government is turning their failure into this “land issues”. Resources, Jobs, Crime, the only solution we have is to use the 4 Million educated Whites, and the educated black South Africans to grow the economy for the +/-50 Million unfortunate South Africans… will never be able to get that which is promised to them by their failing ANC. We need truth on Resources and capability so ALL South Africans understand we stand.

Steve May 18 2010 10:32
And the rott sets in at all levels of Govt and Service Providers...I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE SLEEPING COLD AND WITHOUT ELECTRICITY TO KEEP THE SOCCER STADIUMS LIGHTS ON..??

Mc May 18 2010 09:59
It’s not all Eskoms fault. I know how many millions and billions have been and is being written off by local government in the name of politics. I know how inefficient and corrupt local government is. Eskom also does not really help the cause but is in fact part of the “politics”. The simple fact of the matter is that government is running this country’s power infrastructure on an unsustainable user base. You simply cannot expect a relatively small percentage of the consumer base to pay for the supply of electricity to the whole population. For some reason this government does not realize that if electricity and petrol goes up, everything goes up and with election time approaching, billions are being readied to be flushed down the drain again. Bringing in a private power supplier will not happen because Eskom will not survive any competent competition. I personally find it ridiculous for a company to supply a product and then tell the consumers not to utilize it.

Louis III May 18 2010 09:53
@Siphiwe: Yes, I thought that the rates we paid included costs for maintaining infrastructure(?) Silly me. Agree with you 100% mate.

No Way Hose May 18 2010 09:35
..as usual..we make huge promises only to fall flat on our faces closer to the deadline date.No Eskom!!!!I will not switch off!!!!Security comes first....I am sick and tired of excuses!!

Linda May 18 2010 09:08
@john. I agree with you totally! Eskom, like all other monopolies, abuse their customers and are killing the goose that lays the golden egg. They cut off power to users who are 7 days late in paying - all the while turning a blind eye to the millions of people who have illegal connections for which they pay nothing. If the consitution promises free power, then it should be regulated and controlled and restricted to 1 light and 1 plug. It is ridiculous that shack dwellers get free electricity to run fridges, stoves, microwaves, geysers, tvs, hifis, dvds, dstv (yes! I have seen a dstv dish on a shack. Because they dont pay they keep the lights on all day. One shack can easily consume R1000 worth of electricity a month - which I, and other legitimate Eskom customers, are paying for!! But no amount of moaning is going to change the situation, because as long as people are employed for their politicial affiliatio and not their ability, we will be stuck with incompetents who dont know how to run a race, let alone a company.

Michelle May 18 2010 09:03
We need to switch over to Gas, just like Britain has done and have a good few key players in the energy supply department! It might be a little costly to set up but we NEED an alternative, can someone please provide a workable alternative already!!! Eskom is just like the ANC, there is NO opposition, they can do what they like!

WES May 18 2010 07:03
Im a little confused... they raise our tariffs expoentially for the reason of funding issues. My question is why was these upgrades not done 3 or 4 months ago? its not like they didnt know about the world cup coming to South Africa and this is a bad reflection on use as it shows poor planning skills. I still am confussed why we still allow them to have the monopoly in South Africa with such poor service and Inadiquite(non-existant) planning skills.

Wes May 18 2010 06:57
.... Im confused, they raise our rates exponetially and then they want to pull these sort of stunts.. its not like they didnt know about the world cup... not to mention they should have had these issues worked out months ago. what have they been doing for all these months?

What Now??!! May 17 2010 21:35
Was Eskom the same "company" THAT ACTUALLY gave the assurance to the President & South Africa that "there would be MORE than enough power during the World Cup".....as per motivation for the last 2 years astronomical POWER increases....... so why are we being asked to worry NOW??? Why are all Prastatetals & Political Children NOW trying to hold the Country to Ransom when the SWC is due to start??? Guys we have already PAID the DUES!!! Up your Vit B Complex so that you central nervous system can inform your brain what the salient memories should be

Jonzo May 17 2010 21:18
Imagine all the soccer fans that won't be able to watch at home because there is now power... And we will have to fork out afterwards

Johann May 17 2010 21:08
I noticed that the lights at Soccer city burn 24/7.Perhaps they hope it will remain on if it is not turned off!

investor May 17 2010 19:53
when power stations are built there are six separate units so that maintenance of a unit can be scheduled with an electricity availability of 83%. we are running the whole system too hard. we will suffer from this hard running for the next eight to ten years. all our surrounding countries have very small grids so cannot our extra requirement when even one of our units is down

Carlos May 17 2010 19:44
Ruth, repairing is better than patching, but MAINTAINING is better than both. Eskom's maintenance is ridiculous nowadays. Like everything else, including the ever present graft and corruption, entitlement and simple stupidity.

Shabir ... TSM May 17 2010 19:34
Spot on Realist, after realising that the EksDOM (love it) management is still white, he will blame the Government and my personal favourite "I PAY MY TAXES" ... really?! As for me, I will switch off what i can and do my bit for my country ;) FEEL IT, IT IS HERE!

Eric May 17 2010 18:27
Get Stuffed Eskom - you bunch of morons.

Smiler May 17 2010 17:50
Ah! the more I read the Eskom situation the more it sounds like George Orwell's The Animal Farm. And now the Pigs are running the farm. And we cannot see the difference ebwteen the Pigs and the Huamns anymore either.

Graham May 17 2010 17:46
If a king runs a kingdom then who runs a country?

Stuff ESKOM May 17 2010 17:42
No chance in hell am I turning my lights off because Eishkom is too stupid to do the job properly... In fact I will switch on every light and electrical appliance I can. In the true AFRICAN attitude.. I AM PAYING THEREFORE I DESERVE!!!!!!

Ruth May 17 2010 17:31
Why is the only solution to this dilemna to cut back (a "DARKEST" AFRICA PROBLEM)? When will someone "turn on the lights " for those individuals running the country and point out that repair is a far better solution than to patch up. WAKE UP!!!!!

WTF May 17 2010 17:20
Striker goes for the goal, it looks good.....ladies and gentlemen, we will give you the outcome of the goal as soon as the lights come on again. Abandon all hope, you who enter South Africa...

Spartan May 17 2010 17:05
I have a backup system, can run most of my house & home office for about 8 hours. I realised long ago that with the ANC runnning Eishkom, I have better not trust them delivering.

Craig May 17 2010 17:04
Why dont we switch all our lights on and tell eskom and the rest fo the clowns in carge to shove it? I am paying, i am using - I dont care any more.

Andy May 17 2010 17:03

Imagine the games by candlelight, each of the players could carry one, hahahahahaha, you got to love it this african thing :) Hey, maybe eskom can give all up to date payers, free tickets to go and see the game.

Olivia May 17 2010 16:43
People always ask me why I like living in London and don't want to go back to SA. WELL....the governmnent there obviously don't care. We have electricity here - ALL the time, we have minimal crime, I dont have to worry if the government are out looking like monkeys spending my hard earned taxes on themselves...WAKE UP South Africa. We can see it from here that its turning into Zim and very quickly!

ZION PAY@JOHN May 17 2010 16:42
It would be well to realise that our government is in a dilemma. In order to retain the voters corps in their favour, they, the government cannot really do as they please. The amount of illegal connections in the townships are astronomical. I have been told of huge trucks being loaded to capacity with cables, even cabtyre cable, after an assault on the illegal connections and the surface is hardly scratched. That was done a long time ago. If it is done today we will have the usual protest marches and strive given to destroy the infrastructure. I do not think this problem will ever be sorted out in my lifetime. Escom is nothing more than a coward in this respect.

If they do this we should take a leaf out of the unions books and protest. Imagine the shock and horror of black, coloured and white south africans toyi toying outside Eskom in the middle of an international spectacle LOL. Now that would be a headline! Pick a day lets say June 15 - see you outside the head office?

Manufatured disasters are an easy way from them to justify all the money they are now borrowing from the world bank. Do yourself a favour and watch the documentary "The Smartest Guys in the Room", about Enron and how they held California to ransom with the same tactics.

well, well, up to the typical southern african trick. just like the strikes etc etc, PHUK ESKOM and all their cronies, trying to hold us to ransom again, who is next? Rand Water, telkom, muncipal services, mnet, etc etc come on guys, jump on the bandwagon as well, why not, prove to us & the rest of the world what a corrupt, useless nation we are. Embarrass us more, why not , go the whole mile.It seems thats the only way they can control us, by fear, intimidation, so we can line their pockets.

SAD CITIZEN May 17 2010 16:08
PATHETIC EKSOM!! You have had years to avoid exactly this but instead you spent all your time raiding the cookie jar,how incompetent can you get!! Cut off the power to Mad Bobs house for a month,he wont mind,he'll probably end up staying at the Ritz in New York! We are facing huge criticism overseas as it it,do we need to hear this??

Gary Johnston-webber May 17 2010 16:01
My friends out in the darkness this is typical of SA now, when you watch the various areas that have regular power failures (they call them) you phone and it is the one excuse after the other but never the truth that is they are load shedding already secretly. We had power outages all the time until it got to the newspapers that the city was secretly load shedding and suddenly we have not had one power outage since, but it started happening if other parts of the country - so really it matters not, as if you do not pay they cut you off and if you do pay they cut you off anyway. It will be amazing to see lights on in all the townships in the country so their TV's can work but for the rest plain pitch darkness - friends they will just cut your power and there is nothing you can do about it. I am starting to believe that the citizens of SA need now to band together and sue the Eskom, as we really all have a contract with them, and they are defaulting/breaching that contract all the time, but if you miss one payment (default/breach) they will sue you instantly. We can now see why all the accommodation for the tourists had to be done via Match since they now know where they (the tourists and VIP's) are staying so no power outage in those residences, hotels, B&B's etc but we will have nothing. The people of South Africa stand to gain nothing from these games but will be paying for them forever and your children as well - what a legacy - and what about the water tariffs that are threatening - so many tourists are going to get sick if they stray from their hotels and go into water which is foul, which is now everywhere, and the story is the same as Eskom, no planning but filling pockets etc and they want big tariff increases even though the water authorities altogether have made a profit of 8 to 9% in 2009. It is a disgrace and the world will now see what we really are and good bye investments. Angry

To the @John genius. Whenever you guys are told that the country is falling apart because of the incompetents in charge, your only response is to tell the critics to emigrate. Finally Bafana starts to show some spark and now Eskom wants to spoil the party. It will be a classic if Bafana is leading 1 - 0 and the lights go out. What a joke we South Africans will be to the rest of the world. Which reminds me that in the last two weeks the SA Flag is flying all over the country, just a pity it is being flown the wrong way around. This shows you that there is no pride just stupid mass hysteria. the least a South African should know is how to display your country's flag. Shame on you.

PS May 17 2010 15:45
Dont you think we should get use to these power cuts? Its going to stay with us for many years still. Or until everyone is starting paying for electricity and they build more power stations

Katherine May 17 2010 15:44
What a joke - Our electricity bill has almost doubled and now we are no doubt going to be plunged into darkness on all the match days. I will make them let me know the VIP zone at the stadium with my braai, so that I can at least read my book and have supper [ lol ].

scud May 17 2010 15:44
The Eskom management, and for that matter the ANC could not run a hot dog stand, without breaking it,stealing the food,or losing it all.

@Max May 17 2010 15:44
Don't let Eishkom laugh at you. There is no longer any country called Ciskei, Bophuthatswana or Transkei anymore. But I agree with you about the incovenience that we have to face.

Ber May 17 2010 15:42
As long as there are second rate people in charge you can look forward to second rate service no surprise. Maybe you can sell this as a novelty lets face it none of your tourists will ever have experienced this before.DARKEST AFRICA 2010

TEDDY.P May 17 2010 15:41
Yea right! "Turn off your lights and light a candle"! Hell no. Are they expecting me watch a TV (one) with one light on. Whilst I turnoff all my, electric fence, gate, security lights. All of SAPS will be securing all stadiums which will be well lit. My Family comes first - to hell with Eskom they should ask their special rates clients (huge industries) to leave one light on and switch off all other appliances and machinery. I've been suckered to their tarrifs. SWITCH ON EVERYTHING.

Henry May 17 2010 15:40
I do not understand. Just a month ago eskom said "we will have no problem with electricity supply during the soccer" What has changed????

@@John May 17 2010 15:40
hahahaha...so if you think a little bit, indirectly what you just acknowleged is that when your movement was restricted, crime was much less...hahahahahhah...funny...I will use as much power as I can

Billy May 17 2010 15:39
The lights around Buccleuch interchange were on all weekend. There are a shedload of lights there and they are huge. The useless morons who leave that on should be fired, then ask me to save electricity. This country in serious trouble folks. I hate to say it but my plan B may be used sooner than later. Unfortunately the 50 people i employ may suffer.

gcr May 17 2010 15:39
Could almost be a SWC hit song One cup, One light, One TV; come on bru hook up i legally

Chris May 17 2010 15:38
I already do my utmost to reduce my consumption, but purely to get them back, because they are the only bussiness asking people to use less of what they sell. But it is not working because they now only increase the price of what they sell.Let me tell you this solar water heating system they are promoting now is going to haunt them in the not so distaned future.

joan May 17 2010 15:36
one can believe nothing in this country anymore- all such unqualified people and you have got rid of those qualified who knew what Eskom was able to supply..just get it right and stop making fools of our country

Circus Dalema May 17 2010 15:33
I never thought I would live to see the day when all these goings-on in this circus would happen. Stop the world I want to get off!

MJ May 17 2010 15:33
WOW! Eskom you've gone and done it again!! Your readiness for the world cup is outstanding... It'll be fantastic that during a crucial match, that those people who weren't able to or didnt want to get tickets to the games, will be watching the game, and "POOF" the power gets cut, think of all the tourists sitting in the pubs watching the game cheering at your ability to provide power during the world cup, TO ONLY THE STADIUMS!!! What a wonderful showcase of this country it will be!!! I can only wait with baited breath in anticipation of rolling blackouts!!!! NOT!!!!!! Incompetent parasites!

niglet May 17 2010 15:31
LETS CUT THE CRAP. WHY DON'T WE ALL GO TO WAR. FOR SHIT SAKE ALL WE DO IS COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR NEW GOVERNMENT WHO CLEARLY CANT DELIVER, AND IN FACT ARE DOWN RIGHT USELESS AND TOO THICK AND THICK SKINNED TO EVER MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS. LOOK AHEAD YOU SHORT SIGHTED POLITICIANS. LOOK WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO THE REST OF AFRICA. GIVE OUR JOBS BACK AND LETS SHOW YOU AGAIN. HEY YOU. SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP. NO, I AM LOOKING AT YOU MALEMA. HA HA.

charmain nel May 17 2010 15:30
Where is all the money that Eskom got from overseas for elecricity,I see street lights on all day> I wonder if this is the only country that has this problme sorry we are worse that a threee world. Only Eskom can give this wonderful service to the people NO LIGHTS HA HA you are a joke

Donovan May 17 2010 15:29
This is Eskoms way of telling us that load shedding is going to take place, but not to worry the senoir managers and directors are still going to earn there big slaries and get bonuses paid - what I would like to know is when is Mr Zuma going to set in and stop this unlawful action by Eskon, or is Mr. Zuma too busy with parties, marriages and travelling to worry about this country which is going backwards every day - what about the 142 special compnaies that are paying 9c a KW and they are the biggest users, why is the average person in the street always expected to suffer at the expense of the corrupt management, directors and goverment officials - i think it is sadday in South Africa when Mr Zuma seems to not care about the country or the people who voted him into office. I think all tax payers should stop paying taxes until this goverment starts to sort itself out, and I wish crimninal action is stated agains the borad of directos and the senoir management for corruption because they have taken slaries and bonues for 15 years but has not done there job, maybe its time to take a stand and say if you accept a salary and do not delievber then criminal charges are going to take place, tthis seems the only way to hold corrupt people accountable for there actions

Woodpecker May 17 2010 15:29
C'mon Max, Buphuthatswana, Transkei & Ciskei are part of SA. Excuse Lesotho, it ahs a deal with SA to supply water and get elctricity in exchange. Zim, I don't know.

Digadeeper May 17 2010 15:28
You may not neccessarily know how this thing works; let me put it to you in "ABC" terms - Eskom struck a deal some years ago with many neighbouring countries and guess what? they are paying 0.85c KW/hr whilst you pay in the region of 1.95c KW / hr. Unfortunately, the deal is such that the rate is fixed until th end of the term / contract. It's basically irreverseable. Get it...! Now wena loyal citizen and rate payer who also subsidises Eskom in a way, you are expected to cut down on electricity use whilst you pay the full amount at the end of every month. Nxa, Eishkom.....! Man, i am not wasting my time with this. They must get power somewhere else to supplement the world cup demand, how about getting a discount on the arms deal and buy CAT generators for all the stadia? Who said SA must invest in that nonsense whilst we are under no security threat? Government.....!

Donker May 17 2010 15:27
Interesting to see what the ratio is on paying customers to electrified houses. I am sure that needs to be looked at to see where the money is being lost. Don't sell something if you are not going to get any money for it. RECOVER COSTS THE FAIR WAY.

dw May 17 2010 15:25
That so funny!! One light and a tv so that we can be kept informed. And under the worst circumstance they are going to ask you over the tv to switch that off aswell go to bed. haha.

terry May 17 2010 15:23
....way to go ESKOM .... you show the world what SA is made of! PLONKERS.

cammie May 17 2010 15:22
I somehow recall folk saying how negative some South Africans were being about the World Cup in regard to the infrastructure - prime example being Eskom! Fine time now to start worrying about being under extreme pressure. With the current strikes left, right and centre the outcome and end result is going to have an impact on the SWC, and ultimately on our country's reputation.

Etienne May 17 2010 15:21
@john - Main reason we use more electricity is because of the illegal connections. Dam man we all have to pay but stealing is the in thing!!!!! Wake up and smell the coffee buddy

Mainstay May 17 2010 15:21
I am running almost 3KW at night just for security lights. I am not turning them off to become just a stat. If we all pay for our power then they will have $$$ to build new plants. Most ppl are running generators, so let them cut the power, only the ones with illegal connections will be shouting the loudest.

Arno May 17 2010 15:21
I truly hope every tourist gets raped and robbed so the rest of the world can start taking notice of what's really happening. I'm not saying anything will be sorted out by such acts but atleast then the current government will be forced to start answering some hard questions and maybe stop using apartheid as an excuse for their complete incompetence.

Roflcopter May 17 2010 15:19
amazing how someone pipes up with the "GO LIVE IN AUSTRALIA" chirp, another brainless sheep whose in denial I guess. I do not agree with comparing our new democratic South Africa with the old apartheid one. However 15 years into the new SA and the ANC government has failed dismally. The government knew that with new found freedoms and growth comes an increased demand on infrastructure, but they lined their pockets rather than actually provide for the people. The ANC is not longer populated by honourable men and women, but with fatcats who are permanently after a free lunch, and all at the expense of the people who vote for them time and again. Our government is in denial, but don't worry we will run out of drinkable water before long, and then the lack of electricity will seem insignificant.

Eksdom May 17 2010 15:18
Can you imagine what the average visitor to SA will make of this? May be Eskom could use some of the hot air coming out of parliament to power their turbines?

Danny May 17 2010 15:18
These guys from Eskom must be crazy. They know they don't have enough electricity but continue building out the rular areas on our expenses. We had a huge increase in our electricity bills and now we must not use what we pay for. CRAZY. Next thing with the proposed 107% increase in water, they will expect us to wash in a cup of water and drink a teaspoon of water a day. VIVA TO OUR Government!

Take a Look May 17 2010 15:13
In Paar-Boland, travelling towards the Industrial-area Signboard;"DEPT.ELEKTRISITEIT" underneath..."BEGRAAFPLAAS".Can you get closer to the truth???

Wilma May 17 2010 15:13
@John Why are you turning this around? Just becuse prior 1994 there were less people using electricity - prior to that overseas many many countried used it but SA indigenous people didn't start supplying themselves with anything until it was given to them - now they just want & want & complain about "what they didn't have". Why didn't they start doing this stuff centuries ago - then they don't now have to tell those that helped them out of the dark ages to go to Australia!

Pothole May 17 2010 15:13
All commentators you will find all answers to your questions and problems here. Just Google Human intelligence: The bell curve. It is all about the intelligence gap.

Starlight May 17 2010 15:11
What a joke, Eskom get real, what did you expect - Soccer by Starlight? Soccer by Candlelight?

patrice May 17 2010 15:10
Do the stadiums pull that much power ? Work out the extra load and you will find all stadia burning brightly will use a percentage of a percentage of a percentage of what is available on the national grid. No, this is another way of saying we have again stuffed up and we do not have the resources available that were available 10 years ago, due to our gross naive mismanagement. The World Cup is a convenient scapegoat.

Bob May 17 2010 15:10
No problem, I'll cut down on my usage to ensure that the World Cup is a sucess. Just one question.... with me cutting down on usage and therefore paying less, how will Eskom make up the lost revenue? From the stadiums/city councils/FIFA? Doubt it! Don't bother asking me for more. I can't afford any more increases!

Steve May 17 2010 15:09
Let's face facts. The ANC and Eskom management together have f@@@ed this up. The future is dark, literally and figuratively. Were there not promises that electricity supply would not be a problem during the SWC. Another reason for the tourists to laugh at the deep dark hole called Africa

just askin May 17 2010 15:09
isn't it time that the suburbs/areas that are not paying are cut off? recent reports show that only 26% of electricity used in Soweto is paid for so we await the sutoff of power to those areas. it appears that only certain sectors experience power cuts irrespective of who pays!

tomo May 17 2010 15:08
Eishkom......Uhhh... Ish.. sometimes i just cant believe. typical of idiots that dont even have a std 7.

Malcolm May 17 2010 15:07
If the country's electricity supplier cannot guarantee uninterupted supplies for the people who pay for the service then surely it cannot guarantee supply for the SWC. Bugger the soccer, leave my lights on!!!

Tsotsi May 17 2010 15:06
While FIFA takes over the "World" let them play their games in daylight when hard working SAfricans are at work.....

Henry May 17 2010 15:05
FEEL IT. IT IS HERE.....Welcome ...Welcome to Africa!!

Shame May 17 2010 15:05
Eskom For the price I have to pay for your service I will definitely not turn anything off. Why doe I have to Pay a lot of money and can not use the service I am paying for. South Africa is already in a bad light!!! I will switch on all I have and when I want to. So if you want my co-operation please do the switching yourself!!!!!

Moekie May 17 2010 15:04
Eskom must be the only company on earth, that does not want consumers to use its product. So why should we pay these ridiculously high tariffs.

Andre May 17 2010 15:04
Have anyone noticed that it is only on TV 2 that the meter is for the use of electricity.? Wonder why?Eskom is themselves responsible for the crisis, they have to sort it out themselves....imagine them receiving a lot of summonses for lack of power to people who has prepaid their electricity? It seems like robbery, you cannot sell something that you do not have? Am I wrong? Just asking?

Victor May 17 2010 15:03
Get the money from people that don't to pay. Even the police look the other way when illegal connections are made. Watch BBC news -> http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8376564.stm

Paul May 17 2010 15:02
HAHA Fat chance. Incompetant blundering will no longer affect my life. The SWC has turned into a BIG FAT CON nothing more. Check out the road passed lanseria. Wonderful until 200m passed the airport and then back to rubbish. The tourists will not see that part so who cares. Police show of force A CON... They have been there all the time and no successes. Should I go on. Personally I will use as much electricity as I can and let the world see the real Africa.

Glen May 17 2010 15:02
BLAH BLAH *YAWN* What is new? Same Sh1t everyday from those incompetent idiots at Eskom.

Charles May 17 2010 15:01
I think everyone is getting sicker by the day of this day to day living culture inherited by the previously disadvantaged. Wake up, forward planning is essential for a country.

sean May 17 2010 15:00
Eish !!! Well done ANC !! It`s not eskom`s fault , it`s apartheids fault !! The white man did not teach you not to steal ?? This is so bloody pathetic , but then again many people saw this coming ! Mr Zuma , Malema and the rest of your incompitent leadership , `` KEEP ON GOING BROTHERS , YOU ARE DOING JUST FINE!! ``

EYEHAYTEKSDOM May 17 2010 14:58
@Sparky - I disagree with u, they are making an effort to stop electricity theft - By posting signs all over Sandton CBD. Perhaps they believe that RMB and Deutche bank will get the message and stop running their IT systems from the nearest lamp pole. :)

RODERICK May 17 2010 14:58
Did Eskom only find out now that SA is hosting the SWC.....Did they also only find out now that said games will be held in Winter.....I am getting sick and tired of people holding South Africans hostage, by threatening Strikes, power outages etc etc.....As much as I look forward to the SWC, I honestly wish it was over already....

Gerrit May 17 2010 14:56
In economics 101 we are taught that a efficient and effective market driven economy is based on the privciple of competition, can you imagine what prices we would bepaying if there was only one cell phone operator?! This principle needs to be employed with the power as soon as possible, the time when we needed state intervention for services that required massive capital outlay is over, competiton (if ever allowed in this industry by our goverment) "is the only way to increase service delivery and decrease price," - Adam Smith

KS May 17 2010 14:52
I am sick and tired of your feeble lies,I will use as much electricity as needed,I am paying my increase and nothing gets done, don't let me find out that you are going to get a bonus at the the end of the year all hell will break loose!! KS

DeonL May 17 2010 14:51
Ok, we will watch the oversease rugby etc. on TV by candlelite! I don't think my hearing will survive THE games, even on TV!!

@john May 17 2010 14:51
why dont u use your candles and parrafin -jou hoender

meshack May 17 2010 14:51
never, not gonna sit in total darkness were-as i am paying my bills every month. crazzy

Abigwar May 17 2010 14:49
Lets give these tourists a Classic African welcome. No lights , no roads and lots of violence. Only the English football hooligans will want to come back, seeing as we have the pissiest police in the world.

Morgan May 17 2010 14:47
Posted @John - Why don't you get over the race card already????? Every time there is a debate about the man on the street been raped by all Govt affiliations you jump on your high horse. Ofcourse electricity demand has expanded 100% due to more secure security due to crime, expanded areas that were not properly developed when new houses/town houses were build. It is only common sense to the knowledgable person.....

bc May 17 2010 14:45
@ John, how do you feel about paying electricity for those who don't? I agree with you that the masses were not taken into account pre '94 but post '94??? What has been done since? And crime is not a myth more like a national pastime!

Michael May 17 2010 14:43
Eskom knew years ago that SA had been awarded the 2010 World Cup - Why didn't they start building then for 2010. All their executives should be forced to repay their salaries and bonuses for the work they DIDN'T DO.

Enough@bc May 17 2010 14:42
Good comment - there are very few of us honest paying 'customers', and i have heard from many ppl around me of how their electricity bills have tripled, only to be told that if they dont pay their supply will be cut off. They pay, with a promise to be refunded..blah blah, the refund NEVER comes and Eskom pockets the stolen money. My brother has a regular bill of around R1000 and in October recieved a R4200 bill, "pay or be cut off, we dwill refund you" empty words. A similar rand value to a gent i work with - its shocking - does any one know what can be done about this? AND if you dispute it for too long they cut your supply and you have to pay re-connection fees - its a shameful situation on their part, and they dont care...

Dave May 17 2010 14:41
Agree with all. No way that the usual paying public must continue to give everything up. Joke of note if you ask me. About time they got thier act together and sorted this mess out. Even after all the bonuses that were paid they are still begging for money and doing nothing to improve the situation. Get stuffed Eskom - you have no right to demand this sort of thing.

Vito May 17 2010 14:41
Who Cares, and how will anyone make their beers cold with only 1 TV and 1 light switched on?

Fred Basset May 17 2010 14:41
The worst will come after the SWC is over. Big consumers (mines, smelters, etc) are still running at half load due to an agreement reached with Eskom regarding security of supply during the tournament, but after the soccer is over, it will go back to business as usual, and then the real load shedding will begin. Mark my words...

Pieter May 17 2010 14:39
Eskom can go to hell!!! We live in this country, we're not visitors. We pay for everything in this country....why should we be negatively affected in order for SA to host this event. Let the world sit in darkness in our "glorious" stadiums. Let the soccer be played in darknes.....after-all, they are visiting darkest Africa.

Realist May 17 2010 14:39
Im just sick and tired of the few white people that keep comparing the apartheid regime with the today's government. Cant they get it through their thick skulls that its because of pre 94 that most people stopped paying 4 electricity. Its still part of the contribution to the crime situation. Pre 94 John, You had all the electricity you needed because in the townships, we had the blackouts. Corruption was also high pre 94 but it was the propaganda that made you unaware of it. CAll a spade a spade, ESKOM has been mismanaged by blacks and whites, it will suprise you John to know that most of the eskom management is still white.

Malcolmt May 17 2010 14:37
One TV and one light...I'll let the goverment tell my wife and kids, i aint brave enough.

Diane May 17 2010 14:37
Ha ha ha ha ha ha, ja show dem, show dem how dom our leaders of business and our country is? Make the stupids richer, show dem show dem

roguetrader May 17 2010 14:37
Hello, who patented the luminous soccer ball?

"A" May 17 2010 14:35
@Joan, waar val jy nou uit, On what page are you ????

Lus May 17 2010 14:34
Eskom will you ever get into order? i am so sick of your inefficeincy then you expecting me to cooperate.

@john May 17 2010 14:34
Valid point John but in 1994 you didnt have as many people using electricity because that goverment condemned us to dark neighbourhoods and restricted our movement thus less electricity was used.So stop using the crime thing as a shield.Times have changed buddy GET OVER IT ALREADY OR GO LIVE IN AUSTRALIA.

Noel Lectricity May 17 2010 14:34
...in other words, nothing's changed! It's not like we're going to be inundated with extra tourists, as originally expected, that will be increasing demand. Just another case of "Please South Africa, inconvenience yourself so we don't look like the idiots we are in front of the rest of the world!" We don't deserve the international patronage if we don't have the infrastructure! Get some of these politicians and governmental/parastatal spokespersons to power a wind farm with their hot air - cheap, abundant and inexhaustable electricity for all!!

Max May 17 2010 14:34
I for one, will use as much electricity as I can. I''l turn all the lights on, run a heater in every room, hell, I'll even put a heater in my dog's house. If I remember correctly, EKSDOM promised that we will not have any electricity problems during the SWC. Can EKSDOM please tell all South Africans, how much they are charing Zimbabwe, Bophuthatswana, Lesotho, Transkei and Ciskei for electricity. I am 200% certain, that we, South Africans, are paying a higher rate than these people. This should not be allowed, as EKSDOM belongs to South Africa.

"A" May 17 2010 14:32
@blitzi. I will not heed to this either. We had to go sleep earlier, remember. Now let us see what will happen HAHA HAHA

Sparky May 17 2010 14:32
Agree with John 15 min ago and Blitzi. Why should we. I am sick of been told what to do and all the time we are robbed of electricty to supply illigal tapping running in the locations. I dont see them making a effort so Ill be dammed if i turn my Lights off.  I pay for a service and expect delivery

Not Surprised May 17 2010 14:32
They said there would be NO problems with supply prior to their increase appliation. NERSA has approved their increase, and BOOM. Now they have supply problems. This is sooo typical. I for one will NOT be turning anything off. I hope the conutry ends in TOTAL darkness while the 10000 tourists are here :) hahahahahaha

bc May 17 2010 14:31
@ John - very well said! I would like to know the amount of money owed to Eskom and by which areas!? The more I PAY for electricity - the worse the problem gets! I don't believe the number of paying customers as increased post 1994? Or have they? We, the honest few, will be supporting Eskom for generations!

Enough May 17 2010 14:30
I would like to know how the tourists will enjoy having one tv and one light for their holidays...think a littel Eskom - you have had 4 years to plan this!

SN May 17 2010 14:30
And the next headline will read.... New Eskom CEO handed a 12 Million bonus for a job well done! Idiots!

Joan May 17 2010 14:29
Really Disappointing, It is a real pity that the other issues, like executive Salaries, bonuses, trust issues and smaller matters like maternity leave, etc. clouded the negotiations, other issues relating to pay disparities should have been dealt with as separate issues rather than deal with all grievances simultaneously. I don’t believe there is enough consultation on an ongoing basis instead off all out War during Wage Negotiations. What the Transnet Management should be asking their Human Resources Department is how many of their employees are receiving Debt Counseling and find out WHY? We can only hope that Sanity prevails.

Who cares... May 17 2010 14:29
Let's just enjoy the football, as long as my TV can be on and i have cold beers i'll be happy, we all know the situation and moaning won't fix it!!

Martino May 17 2010 14:28
We knew that loooonnnngggg ago...and they only realised that now?

Gatiepie May 17 2010 14:25
You don't say - so waht's changed?

Jaco Greeff May 17 2010 14:24
Exactly what we expected from a "State-owned Eskom" !!!

Gaz May 17 2010 14:23
This because you have uneducated 'fat cats' taking massive bonuses who have no idea what they doing and who are running Eskom. Afirmative action has been Eskoms Death warrant - but then again, we all know that! Bad Managment, crap planning to show a profit so to get huge 13th cheques - Ho Hum ..Yawn!

Lewsi May 17 2010 14:23
You have got to be joking. I'm not interested in this soccer tournament so I'll use my electricity as I see fit.

Dries May 17 2010 14:22
No Surprise

blitzi May 17 2010 14:20
The last time we were asked to do this, we did. In fact most people in SA participated, but then they came back and said they did not budget for so many people using less electricity and they increased the fees. So tell me, why should we now listen and participate? Why should we now again help them where they have not showed any assistance to us? My call is to boycott the call and use more, embarrass them and let them take note that if they mess with the customer, they will come second...

Piet May 17 2010 14:19
So now we have to suffer because the South African government has done f'all in the 4 years since winning the hosting of the SWC to sort out Eksdom. But maybe, just maybe, we will see the finger of God in the form of an Icelandic volcano make the SWC a non-event

Eishkom May 17 2010 14:19
Did we expect anything else from a company run by politicians who have very little business experience bar the colour of their skin. Keep on raising prices but supply is not guaranteed! Maybe collect money from those areas where payment is low (e.g. SOWETO), and then run a real business? JuJu must be so very proud!!!!

"A" May 17 2010 14:19
One TV and one light, that will be the day !!!!

Why not just come out with the truth and say there will be power cuts???????? Really ask people to switch off electrical applicances hahahahaha

Siphiwe May 17 2010 14:16
Eskom...you knew about this power problem 10 years ago , but instead of fixing it , you were filling your back pockets , eish what you going to do now , i know lets nail our own people in the country so we can get more money

Umm..... May 17 2010 14:14
Now there`s a surprise!

DREAM ON CHINAS! May 17 2010 14:12
Sorry Eskom but dont expect any co-operation from me. I have have to endure just to many loadsheddings this month alone (Sunday 10 hours straight) and will make sure that I use as much electricity as possible during this period. Along with MANY MANY others! Ask BOB to lend you some instead.

Up in Smoke May 17 2010 14:12
Trust Eskom to not deliver. Didn't they promise this would not happen? Sorry, not a hater but Eskom is an embarrassment. Time to deliver!

When Escom and Joburg Power cut the illegal connections, turn off street lights that burn 24/7 and collect outstanding monies owed to them I might consider turning off a few lights etc. If "they" can set up after hours reduced costs I would run my pool motor at night. One reason for the increase in electricity consumption is the because of the crime situatiion. Prior to 1994 I did not have electric gates, electric fences, security lights, lights burning all night, atarm systems etc.
